Summary: | This article reviews progress in the theory and technique of work with
transference in short-term dynamic psychotherapy (STDP). There has been
significant evolution in technique since Freud's original development
of the construct. Some of the major challenges to Freud's
recommendations regarding transference are highlighted in addition to surveying
recommendations made by Malan, Sifneos, Davanloo, and Strupp regarding work with
transference in STDP. Based on modern notions of STDP, recommendations for
technique are developed. These recommendations are characterized by an emphasis
on an active, interpersonal approach to manifestations of transference. |
