Summary:This article provides a brief overview of the current status of the group psychotherapy literature. Although comments are offered regarding developments in theory and training in group methods, the major emphasis is on practice and research. Projections for the practice of group therapy include the expanding application of short-term and self-help approaches, refinements in matching treatments and patients' needs, and the more effective integration of treatment modalities. Research on group interventions is expected to reflect growing efforts to link group process and outcome, more congenial collaboration between investigators and practitioners, and more sophisticated blending of idiographic and nomothetic research ideologies.
