Description
Summary:ABSTRACT Among the goals of recent supported employment legislation is improvement of competitive employment opportunities for people with severe disabilities, particularly for those groups for whom competitive employment outcomes are poor. One method for examining long-term employment outcomes is survival analysis. A study of 90 consecutive job placements in a supported employment program for individuals with severe mental illness was conducted to examine employment longevity. Results indicated significant differences for long-term employment retention between minorities and nonminorities, and among psychiatric diagnostic categories. The author discusses the advantages of survival analysis methodology for studying employment retention data. Recommendations for the use of this methodology, as well as areas for further research, are discussed.
