Description
Summary:"The present article has suggested that a college environment may be viewed as a system of pressures, practices, and policies intended to influence the development of students toward the attainment of important goals of higher education. The first draft of an instrument for measuring these influences systematically has been constructed." College Characteristics Index data analyzed thus far "reveal significant differences in the press of different college environments. The instrument itself, which has subsequently been revised, appears to be promisingly reliable and valid. In the long run, research which this type of instrument makes possible should increase understanding of the ways in which institutions make their impact upon students and provide a broader conceptualization for evaluating the effectiveness of higher education."
