Self-monitoring and speech in feigned and unfeigned lying

One dimension of the self-monitoring (SM) construct involves the ability to control one's expressive self-presentation behavior. Consequently, high SM Ss can be expected to be better deceivers than low SM Ss. A previous factor analysis of M. Snyder's (1974) Self-Monitoring Scale identified...

Description
Summary:One dimension of the self-monitoring (SM) construct involves the ability to control one's expressive self-presentation behavior. Consequently, high SM Ss can be expected to be better deceivers than low SM Ss. A previous factor analysis of M. Snyder's (1974) Self-Monitoring Scale identified 3 factors: Other-Directedness, Extraversion, and Acting. In the present 2 experiments, in which 89 undergraduates served as Ss, the Extraversion and Acting subscales correlated with deception skills--defined as the ability to control the temporal pacing of one's speech so that it would be nearly the same when lying as when telling the truth--in an unfeigned lying situation, but only acting correlated with successful feigned lying.
