Summary: | Is practitioner interest in prescriptive authority an indicator of our increased adoption of a biological approach to mental health treatment? This exploratory survey examined the relationship between practitioners' causal attributions for a subset of
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders
(text revision;
American Psychiatric Association, 2000
) diagnoses and attitudes toward prescribing. Although practitioners favoring prescriptive privileges did show a trend toward biological conceptualizations, the predominant result of the survey suggested that practitioners continue to strongly support the utility of psychotherapy. Further, most practitioners indicated that a biopsychosocial approach was most informative in guiding actual practice. Implications of these results for our identity as psychologists and for clinical decision making are discussed. |
