Summary:The issue of addressing problems of student competence that arise in training programs has merited increasing attention in the literature. Articles in this special issue discuss problems in student competence from three distinct perspectives: legal and risk management, ecological, and collaborative. This discussion reviews how the central points from each article may be used to formulate a coherent agenda for conceptualizing a response to problems in student competence, with an accompanying program of related research.
