Summary: | This introduction describes the origin of the idea for and the purpose of this special issue. For the past few years, there has been increasing discussion of the roles psychologists play in the U.S. Intelligence Community (IC) and Department of Defense (DOD). With few exceptions, not much of this discussion has been informed by those who do the actual work. The authors in this special issue, all of whom have extensive knowledge of and experience consulting in national security contexts, provide a sample of the wide range of consultation provided by psychologists serving in the IC and DOD. They provide some insight into the roles that consulting psychologists play in and the value that they provide to these communities. A discussion of the associated ethics and a model of complementarity between embedded and external consultants are also included. |
