Description
Summary:An abstract of a study by Niekamp et al determining the role of dietary pH on maximal respiratory exchange ratio during exercise testing is presented. Maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) is an indicator of cardiovascular fitness. It is commonly used to quantify exercise training adaptations and is also used for clinical evaluation of cardiac insufficiency in heart failure patients. A maximal respiratory exchange ratio (RERmax) ≥ 1.10 is used as an objective criterion to determine whether an individual has given maximal effort during a VO2max test. Therefore, RERmax is important for the validity of VO2max assessments.
