Description
Summary:An abstract of a study by Geraghty et al describing the differences between the intestinal microflora in children with autism as compared to that in typical children is presented. Results indicate that the significantly lower levels of lactobacillus and significantly higher levels of specific Clostridia suggest possible etiologies for gastrointestinal symptoms in children with autism. Further study is warranted to determine the relationship between these symptoms and gastrointestinal microflora and whether probiotic supplementation would be an efficacious intervention.
