Description
Summary:With the recent surge in environmental consciousness and Farm to School Programs, Illinois has enacted the Illinois Local Food, Farms, and Jobs Act of 2009. This law states all k-12 institutions spending $25,000 or more on government funded food products will have to buy 10% of their products from local vendors in Illinois by Previous research indicates foodservice employees perceive challenges to purchasing local foods. An abstract of a study by Wleklinski and Smith assessing if an educational workshop and demonstration on utilizing local produce influences foodservice purchasers' perceptions of benefits and challenges to purchase local foods is presented. Results suggest that educational workshops might negatively influence perceptions to challenges of food procurement. Future research needs to investigate if other factors influence local food procurement perceptions, such as motivation, school location and school size.
