Description
Summary:For more information and digital images documenting this innovative exhibition see http://www.brooklynmuseum.org/research/digital-collections/ pna1923/ Stewart Culin worked closely with M.D.C. Crawford (1882-1949), research editor of Women's Wear and consultant to the American Museum of Natural History to bring together representatives from the fashion industry, artists, designers and museums into a closer relationship. Crawford alluded to this new found interest in American design: "Since the War there has been a consistent effort on the part of the authorities of the Brooklyn Museum to offer the facilities of their reserve collections to the textile and costume designers of this city and indeed of the country at large. The sketches were frequently exhibited at the Brooklyn Museum starting with the exhibition French Fashion Sketches from the Henri Bendel Collection held in 1944 and at other museums such as the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, the Rhode Island School of Design and several other art schools throughout the United States.
