Summary: | It is with heartfelt thanks and humility that the author accepts the Theodore Matson Memorial Award. His initial work experience was at the city of Chicago Bureau of Street Traffic, where he began as a summer intern and where he learned the satisfaction of designing something and then being able to experience the results of his design improvements shortly thereafter. In the author's work on developing the Pedestrian Guide he had to work with the US Access Board to ensure compatibility with ADAAG, where he got a chance to work with Lois Thibeault, who was extremely supportive and helpful with her guidance. The most important advance is the growing acceptance of bicycles and pedestrians as valid transportation modes to be given equal weight to the automobile in the planning and design of urban environments, including universal accessibility through ADAAG and now PROWAG. |
