Summary:The optimal development of the leaf area of millet and buckwheat plants is determined in field experiments with the local application of fertilizers in various doses and combinations on chernozem soils in the steppe zone of the Southern Urals. The maximum millet leaf area of 37400 m 2 /ha is noted in the heading stage with the application of N 90 P 90 and that of buckwheat 36200 m 2 /ha in the flowering stage with the application of P 60 .
