Description
Summary:Gerhard Göhler's and Karl-Siegbert Rehberg's institutional theories explain the constitutive force of the symbolic dimension of institutions by Ernst Cassirer's "Philosophy of Symbolic Forms" (PSF). This paper examines the way and the consequences of this explanation and presents three theses: (1) Göhler's integration of Cassirer's categories negates the advantages of PSF for his institutional theory, and Rehberg's integration of PSF negates the differences between his institutional theory and social theory. (2) Nevertheless, both Göhler's and Rehberg's theories are characterized by the same problem: They use PSF only to clarify the symbolic meaning of things, that are described as institutions, but they do not employ PSF to explain the symbolic meaning of institution as a concept. (3) Finally, this paper briefly discusses how institutional theory may instrumentalise such an alternative use of PSF to conceptualise institution as a symbolic form.[PUBLICATION ABSTRACT]
