Description
Summary:The ontogenetic stages of the oribatid mite Cymbaeremaeus cymba (Nicolet, 1855) were investigated morphologically from egg to tritonymph. The egg shell consists of a thick and massive exochorion, which shows large bumps and scattered pores leading into hollow spaces beneath the elevations. Species specific characters for the immatures include the characteristic plication, extremely long solenidia φ₁ on tibia I and spherical granules enveloping all setae. The comparison with juveniles of other genera of the family Cymbaeremaeidae suggests the closest relationship is with Ametroproctus (Coropoculia) Higgins and Woolley, 1968, whereas on the contrary Scapheremaeus Berlese, 1910 exhibits only marginal similarities with C. cymba.
