Summary: | Although fresh water is an abundant resource in the Peruvian Amazon, the contamination renders it unsafe for human consumption. Many villages have little means to purify their water nor understand why it is warranted. An engineering group from the University of Alabama facilitated by Nature and Culture International, visited the Amazonian village of Ayacucho to perform an evaluation of the residents’ attitudes, quality of water sources in the immediate area and an existing water treatment system. A better understanding of the village’s concerns and issues was gained despite the language barrier. Results indicate that the local water sources are contaminated and that the water treatment is reducing these contaminants. |
