Summary:With the recognition that the quality of communication by clinicians with patients can be influenced by training, a number of approaches to such training have been described in the literature. Some of these different models for communication training are described in this discussion paper, and the reader is challenged to consider the importance of attending to both skills and attitudes in order to design a truly effective programme of training.
