Description
Summary:(Two of the gnostic discussions are reviews, of Frickel's monograph on the Apophasis Megal, and Wucherpfennig's study of Heracleon's commentary on John.) There are some discussions of Nag Hammadi texts (the previously unpublished 2008 essay has short discussions of the Tripartite Tractate and the Exegesis on the Soul; the Gospel of Truth is the focus of chapter viii, the Paraphrase of Shem of chapter x), but the general focus of the articles in the book is upon the representations of gnostic mythology in the Fathers, and the fragments preserved by those same writers. [...]following on from the first, is the influence of Platonism upon gnosis. There is an admirable consistency in the volume, and the constituent parts really are mutually dependent, such that a lacuna left in chapter ix is filled in chapter viii, and a suggestive hint there is expanded upon in chapter i. Despite its shortcomings, this volume is a useful complement (and challenge) to the growing body of literature on gnosis and Gnosticism currently emerging from the United States.
