Summary: | Frestedt et al discuss a randomized, placebo controlled, double blind, clinical trial that assessed the impact of barley β-glucan on glucose levels and insulin sensitivity. Fifty healthy subjects at high risk for type 2 diabetes were counseled to maintain their baseline weight for the 12 week study while following the Therapeutic Lifestyle Change (TLC) Diet and consuming the test article, a flavored water beverage three times daily. Subjects maintained their energy intake and body weight during the trial and the observed changes in glucose and insulin levels over time were assigned to the nutritional test article beverage. Careful counseling and detailed diet analyses are imperative when testing nutritive components of the diet. |
