Summary: | Instead of being victims of war, Victoria's "heroickesses" earn the spoils of war as the agents whose labor occasions its acquisition. [...] by the end of the play, we are told, "the Lady Victoria and her she Officers and Commanders have distributed all their spoils got in these Wars amongst the Common she Souldier" (2 BC, 5.22), thus the play's vision of martial-social mobility becomes a reality for all soldiers through the army's collective achievements, its leader's benevolence, and that of the play's nearly-absent king, a ruler apparently secure enough in his position that he is willing to part with some of his power to those who have publicly fulfilled their duty to him against his enemies. |
