Summary: | Some immigrant communities construct specific understandings of their cultural heritage that do not conform to the dominant forms of their coreligionists and other immigrants of their nationality. With expectations in the US about a unitary national and religious identification, these communities have to negotiate between their acquiescence to the larger immigrant and religious communities and their own construction of their regional heritage. The two communities in this study, Sindhi Hindus and Indo-Caribbean Hindus, demonstrate the complexity of negotiating these multiple identifications and pressures. |
