Description
Summary:Reviews the book, Faces in the Revolution: The Psychological Effects of Violence on Township Youth in South Africa by Gill Straker with Fatima Moosa, Rise Becker, and Madiyoyo Nkwale (1992). This book is, in the reviewer's opinion, fascinating as well as important. The book is fascinating because it presents a very sensitive, detailed description of life as it was experienced by Black youth during the violent, revolutionary years immediately prior to the abolition of apartheid. It is an important book for psychologists because it seeks to shed light on the factors that contribute to both the psychological vulnerability and the psychological resilience of youth at war. It also addresses the significant questions of whether a brutalized generation of youth have their capacity for empathy and guilt impaired and whether the exercise of violence in response to being subjected to violence and injustice has a healing, individual effect.
