Description
Summary:Physiologic anisocoria is present in 20% of the population, and the difference in size is not greater than 1 mm. Differential Diagnosis The evaluation of pupillary asymmetry frequently raises concern about structural lesions but the differential includes many other common entities. Exam Techniques As the differential for pupil asymmetry in children is vast, and some of the causes are life-threatening, a structured and efficient evaluation is useful. Figure 2 depicts an algorithm for the evaluation of pupil asymmetry in children. Algorithm for the evaluation of pupil asymmetry in children Observe Pupillary Diameter in Bright and Dim Light. The oculovestibular reflex is performed by irrigation of the external auditory canal with cold water.
