Description
Summary:This paper examines the etymology of the verbs trouver, trovare, and trobar, touching on such problems as the lack of semantic plausibility in the tradition etymological hypothesis and the phonetic difficulties of other hypotheses. Starting from the premise that all the verbs for 'find' in European languages belong to the semantic field of hunting, this paper proposes a combination of the verb in question with the Celtic root * TRO(P) - 'hunt, gather around the prey', well attested within Welsh and Irish, and conceivably also in the Celtic languages of the continent.
