Summary:The simulation of a cold shock was performed in an incubation experiment with soil microcosms by a sharp decrease of the temperature to negative values and the subsequent analysis of the nitrification rate of the ammonium-oxidizing microorganisms. Three procedures of the cold shock effect were selected: long, short-time, and cyclic. A significant decrease of the nitrifying activity was recorded after the long effect, whereas the 8-, 16-, and 24-hour cold shocks did not affect the intensity of nitrification. A cyclic temperature decrease alternating with periods of incubation under high temperatures also did not affect the nitrifying activity of the microorganisms. We suppose that the domination of mesophilic microorganisms with a resistant enzyme system or of psychrophilic and psychrotolerant microorganisms contributes to the preservation of a high nitrification level in soils with frequent alternations of high and low temperatures.
