Summary:Z-E isomerisation of six styrene- and stilbene-derived chromophores featuring 4, 5-dicyanoimidazole unit was investigated. The photo-isomerisation was induced by irradiation of the chormophore in ethyl acetate. The observed photo-isomerisation has been studied by measuring absorption and fluorescence spectra as well as by super(1)H NMR spectroscopy. It was found that the absorbance of the longest-wavelength band of starting E-isomers decreased and, simultaneously, the absorbance of Z-isomers in the short-wavelength region increased during the irradiation. Additionally, a gradual decrease of the fluorescence intensity was observed. The fluorescence quenching was attributed to the formation of a non-fluorescent Z-isomer.
