Summary: | In this paper we propose a system identification method for hybrid systems switched according to the absolute value of the velocity or displacement. First, it is shown that the regression vector space of a mechanical system switched according to the absolute value of the velocity or displacement cannot be separated by a hyperplane. Then a method based on support vector machines with a polynomial kernel is proposed. The effectiveness of this method is shown by simulations using a spring‐mass‐damper system. © 2011 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
