Description
Summary:From this land tenure discussion comes the book's title, where "multiple waves of private, reactionary revolutions" (p. 176) refer to the successive struggles over land ownership and management that have shaped and defined private ranching realities in Sonora since the colonial period. The predominant view holds that Sonoran ranchers are victims of postwar beef demand in the United States, a geographic reorganization of feedlot operations, liberalized trade, and an aggressive state-led modernization of Mexico's cattle industry. Since there has been very little attention to private ranchers in this discussion, they are usually assumed to be direct beneficiaries of a structure that disadvantages small and communal ranchers.
