The IIS provides for the first time a comprehensive and up-to-date index of statistical information published by major intergovernmental organizations, along with microfiche access to source documents. The purpose of this article is to explain the features of the IIS and to discuss its position in the panoply of statistical reference materials concerning data on developing countries.
