Description
Summary:This paper describes the distribution and development of flat-racecourses in Great Britain. Racecourse evolution is traced through a series of types from those of Town Plate origin in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries to the creation of the Enclosed courses at the turn of this century. The present century has seen a decline in the number of courses. Finally, the distribution of training grounds is presented, together with their relationships with current racecourses.
