Summary: | In its concern to map and explain the growth path taken by the British economy during the industrial revolution, modern economic history is almost bereft of any informed analysis of the role of government. This paper reconstructs the political and legal framework within which one very important industry, cotton textiles, developed over time; places constitutional, political, and fiscal, as well as economic history into a framework which allows for comparisons with Holland and France; and reaffirms the significance of politics and the state for British industrialization. |
