Summary:China is likely to emerge from the deepening capitalist crisis as a model of development for emerging nations and prime mover in the world. The goal of this special issue of "Science & Society" is to inaugurate a useful exchange and dialogue about China and its future among Marxists from within and without the academy. The contributors touch upon most of the key questions regarding the move toward a market economy undertaken since 1978 and their implications for the future.
