Summary:Updates a survey of local authority archive services commissioned in 1992 by the National Council on Archives and the Royal Commission on Historical Manuscripts. Summarizes the responses to each section of the survey questionnaire and draws tentative conclusions about the position of local government archive services in 1996 as compared with 1992. The 1996 questionnaire is reproduced in an appendix, together with a list of repositories which returned it. Scotland and Wales were not included in the 1996 update.
