Summary: | A facile approach is presented for successful synthesis of hyperbranched polymers with high molecular weight and uniform structure by a one-pot polymerization of an inimer in a microemulsion. The segregated space in the microemulsion confined the inimer polymerization and particularly the polymer–polymer reaction within discrete nanoparticles. At the end of polymerization, each nanoparticle contained one hyperbranched polymer that had thousands of inimer units and low polydispersity. The hyperbranched polymers were used as multifunctional macroinitiators for synthesis of “hyper-star” polymers. When a degradable inimer was applied, the hyper-stars showed fast degradation into linear polymer chains with low molecular weight. |
