Summary: | In November 2010, Next American City hosted Open Cities: New Media's Role in Shaping Urban Policy, a two-day conference funded for the second year in a row by the Rockefeller Foundation. Organized and chaired by John Cary, the conference united new media and urban policy's top thinkers and practitioners. Latitude Research, which partnered with the magazine at the event, conducted a follow-up survey of attendees and other interested individuals to generate ideas about what the Open City looks like and how they can make it a reality. A collection of major themes, quotes from respondents and bold ideas that are surprisingly practical and implementable is presented. They are: 1. envisioning the future city, 2. local governance and civic engagement, 3. citizen journalism and new media, 4. transportation systems and mobility, and 5. buying, selling and exchanging goods in cities. |
