Summary:An estimated 25,000 infants are born to hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive women annually in the US. With no intervention, 40%-90% of these infants will acquire hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection. Approximately 90% of infected infants develop chronic HBV infection, with a 15%-25% risk for premature death from cirrhosis or cancer of the liver. Benson et al discuss the postvaccination serologic testing results for infants aged less than or equal to 24 months exposed to hepatitis B virus at birth in the US from 2008-2011.
