Summary:Drawing on unpublished correspondence, this article presents a rare account of the background, formation, and work of a nineteenth-century professional translator, Ellen Marriage (1865-1946). It focuses particularly on her work for the complete English translation of Balzac's La Comédie humaine published by J. M. Dent, 1895-8, which it sets in the context of other Balzac translations of the period. Marriage belonged to the first generation of women translators who benefited from the new thinking on girls' education. The article aims to show both what she did for Balzac translation and what Balzac translation did for her, as a gifted but unfulfilled woman of the 1890s.
