Summary: | Endogenous retroviruses are characterized as repetitive elements of the human genome. Their origin and function in the genome and the role of retroviral infection in the evolution of the human genome and in general regulation of gene activity are considered. Modern data on transcriptional activation of endogenous retroviruses in the norm and in certain disorders are reviewed. The use of the data on retrovirus biology in theoretical and applied medicine is discussed. |
