Description
Summary:A new map of gypsiferous soils has been developed on the basis of generalized cartographic and analytic data of a detailed soil survey at the Dzhizak Experimental Station. This map reflects the major regularities of the geographic distribution of gypsum pedofeatures in the studied soils. A detailed macro- and micromorphological description of the gypsiferous horizons makes it possible to specify three morphological types of these horizons with incrustation, concretionary, and farinaceous gypsum concentrations. Their spatial distribution is closely related to the soil types, their position in the landscape, the groundwater level, and the type of soil water regime. The necessity to consider gypsiferous soils in the new classification of Russian soils at a high taxonomic level is discussed. A map of the morphological types of gypsiferous horizons has been compiled with the use of GIS-technologies and special scales for the description of the morphological parameters of gypsum pedofeatures.
