Optical Spectroscopy of Multiferroic Rare-Earth Manganites

Hexagonal rare-earth manganites (RMnO 3 with R = Er, Tm, Yb) have been studied by high resolution absorption spectroscopy in the infrared spectral range around the Néel-temperature (T N ≈ 80 K). Series of transitions have been assigned for the R 3+ rare-earth ions in trigonal crystal field. Some of...

Description
Summary:Hexagonal rare-earth manganites (RMnO 3 with R = Er, Tm, Yb) have been studied by high resolution absorption spectroscopy in the infrared spectral range around the Néel-temperature (T N ≈ 80 K). Series of transitions have been assigned for the R 3+ rare-earth ions in trigonal crystal field. Some of the Stark components of the rare-earth multiplets split below the Néel-temperature due to magnetic ordering. The Néel-temperature for the three compounds investigated decreases with increasing lattice constant (a).
