Summary: | While fear-related emotions are universal, ways to express and categorise them are not. How then do Inuit people talk about them? In this article, I provide some answers by studying the lexicon of fear in Inuktitut as spoken in North Baffin Island, the data being largely from the community of Mittimatalik (Pond Inlet). In this region, I found nine main word stems that can be used to express fear, each of them dealing with a more or less broad component, ranging from specific to generic, of the emotional spectrum of fear. A system of classification is proposed. Adapted from the source document |
