Description
Summary:The Derby Room was created in 1927-28 by Fiske Kimball using architectural fragments salvaged from several different rooms in the Ezekial Hersey Derby House. Charles Bulfinch designed the building in 1795-98, but much of the interior finish was by Samuel McIntire. Rather than being a recreation o a single room from the house, Kimball created an idealized parlor to celebrate Salem's unique neoclassical style and McIntire's role in creating it. Should the room be left intact to honor Kimball and the colonial revival movement, or would other options for interpretation be more meaningful to a modern audience? [Publication abstract]
