Summary: | Discusses the nature of streets, focusing on how artists and designers can create projects that contribute to the debate around their use. The authors outline a campaign that restored a public right of access in Newburyport, Massachusetts, consider the range of activities for which streets are used, and their public and private character, and explore the architects William Conway and Marcy Schulte's attempt to re-frame the use of streets in their project De-code/Re-code Atlanta. They assess the consequences of business interests on the culture of the streets, with reference to public art works in Toronto, and identify strategies that artists can adopt when devising and producing street projects. They conclude by describing how these approaches informed their research into the re-planning of space in Newburyport. |
