Summary: | Replying to an open call entitled `Rethinking Leonardo , launched by the journal's executive editor Roger Malina in Leonardo no. 36 (2003), two editorial board members suggest possible lines of development for future issues of the journal. Franke asserts the continuing pertinence of its agenda, contending that much remains to be explored that is of common interest to artists, scientists and technologists, isolates two areas which he feels demand close attention - the historical processing and archiving of digital art, and recent neurological and behavioural research - and concludes that the printed journal should continue alongside other publication formats. Kac also acknowledges the value of the printed journal, and encourages diversity and attention to neglected topics like biotech, nanotech and space art, as well as coverage of geographical zones other than the U.S.A. and Europe - for instance, the Dakar Biennial - and of emerging art forms based on video games, the Internet, and cell phones. |
