Summary: | Discusses the work of the Belgian painter Luc Tuymans (b.1958) in relation to that of the German painter Gerhard Richter (b.1932). The author notes how both painters are interested in other media such as photography, suggests that Richter's modernist anxiety about painting's limitations is rejected by Tuymans, and argues that the former filmmaker Tuymans uses a false naïvety to present painting as one art form among many others. He recalls Tuymans s take on Belgian colonialism for the 49th Venice Bienniale in Venice (2001), asserts that he is an installation artist who creates an uncomfortable mood with his use of grey shades, and illustrates his argument with works including Frozen (2003; col. illus.), Dancing (2003; col. illus.), Tropical Institute (2003; col. illus.), Animation (2002; col. illus.), selections from the exhibition Fortune (2003; col. illus.), and Tsjombe (2000; col. illus.). |
