Summary: | Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are mesenchymal tumors arising from the interstitial cells of Cajal within the visceral myenteric plexus.1 They may arise throughout the entire gastrointestinal tract.1 Small bowel GISTs account for approximately 30 to 45 per cent of this group.1 The clinical presentation of these tumors is varied. In an early series, 59 per cent of patients with completely resected small bowel GISTs had developed distant metastasis at 25 months.3 Recent data demonstrated an improved recurrence-free survival and overall survival with 36 months of adjuvant imatinib in patients with high-risk tumors (size greater than 5 to 10 cm; mitotic count greater than 10/50 high-power fields; evidence of tumor rupture).4 The small bowel represents a common site for the development of GISTs. |
