Description
Summary:The importance attached to the elimination of waterborne diseases and the benefits of disinfection applied to drinking water for human consumption are briefly considered, together with the various types of causative agent, from bacteria to helminth ova and viruses, which must be inactivated during treatment. Methods of disinfection are considered and compared with respect to their initial effectiveness and persistence in the network. Only chlorine based systems are capable of providing the necessary residual for the long term protection of water quality. The methods for routine monitoring of disinfection efficiency are also discussed from the use of culture techniques, plate counting and related visual observations to the use of immunological methods having a high level of selectivity.
