Toxaphene in Great Lakes fish: a temporal, spatical and trophic study
Archival fish samples collected in 1982, 1992 and 1994 were extracted with organic solvents, the extracts fractionated by gel permeation chromatography then analysed for hexa- to deca-chlorinated norbornanes and norbornenes, the constituents of toxaphene, by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Lak...

Summary: | Archival fish samples collected in 1982, 1992 and 1994 were extracted with organic solvents, the extracts fractionated by gel permeation chromatography then analysed for hexa- to deca-chlorinated norbornanes and norbornenes, the constituents of toxaphene, by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) from Superior lake, Michigan lake and Huron lake had higher lipid-normalized toxaphene concentrations than the rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax); both trophic levels had similar concentrations in Ontario lake and Erie lake. Between 1982 and 1992, toxaphene concentrations in both species in Superior lake were almost unchanged while declining in the other lakes. The reductions were expected because toxaphene was banned in the U.S.A. in 1982. Observations in Superior lake might be explained by lake-specific sources or slower removal of the insecticide.
