Effect of the volatile fatty acids on phosphate uptake parameters by pure culture of Acinetobacter sp
The phosphate uptake parameters of 4 Acinetobacter strains were investigated as a function of volatile fatty acids (VFA) in the form of acetic, butyric and propionic acids, as the carbon source. Four stains of Acinetobacter strains were studied, and these were: Acinetobacter calcoaceticus NRRL 4270,...

Summary: | The phosphate uptake parameters of 4 Acinetobacter strains were investigated as a function of volatile fatty acids (VFA) in the form of acetic, butyric and propionic acids, as the carbon source. Four stains of Acinetobacter strains were studied, and these were: Acinetobacter calcoaceticus NRRL 4270, Ac. calcoaceticus NRRL 8058, Ac. calcoaceticus ATCC 23055 and Acinetobacter SUCT 5. Data are provided on the phosphorus uptake parameters of the 4 strains, and these suggest that the 3 VFA were efficiently consumed by the various stains, with the exception of Acinetobacter SUCT 5, which exhibited poor propionic acid consumption. However, the ability of a VFA to stimulate phosphate uptake was found to be dependent on the nature of the VFA. The best ratios of assimilated phosphate to the VFA consumed are provided. Coupling the phosphorus removal system with the acidogenic phase of anaerobic digestion would enhance phosphorus removal. |
